KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University
alumna Elyse Mirto took home honors for Outstanding Actress in a Lead
Role at the New York Innovative Theatre Awards ceremony recently.
Her
performance in "Any Day Now," produced by the Writer's Forum at
Manhattan Theatre Source, was recognized by the organization that
advocates Off-Off-Broadway theatrical productions or those typically in
theatres with fewer than 100 seats.
Mitro, a 1991 WMU
graduate of music theatre performance, received the award Sept. 21 at
the Fifth Annual IT Awards Ceremony at New World Stages in New York
City. A total of 19 awards and three honorary awards were presented.
A
second WMU alumna, Brynn Curry, also was nominated for Outstanding
Actress in a Featured Role for her work in "Like You Like It," produced
by The Gallery Players. Curry is a 2008 WMU graduate of music theatre
performance.
The IT Awards are given annually to honor
individuals and organizations who have achieved artistic excellence in
Off-Off-Broadway theatre and recognize the unique role these
performances play in contributing to American and global culture.
